Hadronic W production and the Gottfried sum rule.

چکیده
The difference in production rate between W and W− at hadron colliders is very sensitive to the the difference between upand down-quark distributions in the proton. This sensitivity allows for a variety of useful measurements. We consider the difference ds(x,Q ) − us(x,Q2) in the sea distributions and the difference ∆u(x,Q2)−∆d(x,Q2) in the polarized parton distribution functions. In both cases we construct an asymmetry to reduce systematic uncertainties. Although we discuss measurements at the Tevatron and future hadron colliders, we find that the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is the most appropriate hadron collider for these measurements.

The sensitivity of W and Z production at RHIC to the possible ū/d̄ asymmetry in the proton is studied. The ratios of the W over W production cross sections in p+ p collision, as well as the ratios of the W and Z production cross sections for p + p over p + d collisions, are shown to be sensitive to this asymmetry. Predictions of various theoretical models for these ratios are presented. The vali...
متن کاملNonperturbative Effects in the Proton Sea
We revisit the evaluation of the pionic mechanism of the ū − d̄-asymmetry in the proton structure function. Our analysis is based on the unitarity relation between contributions of different mechanisms to the inclusive particle production and the total photoabsorption cross-section (i.e. the proton structure function). We reanalyze the role of isovector reggeons in inclusive production of nucleo...
متن کاملParton Degrees of Freedom from the Path-Integral Formalism
We formulate the hadronic tensor Wμν of deep inelastic scattering in the path-integral formalism. It is found that there are 3 gauge invariant and topologically distinct contributions which correspond to the valence, cloud and sea partons. The phenomenological consequences of this classification in terms of the small x behavior, Gottfried sum rule violation, and evolution are emphasized. The op...

The intrinsic quark-antiquark pairs generated by the minimal energy nonperturbative meson-baryon fluctuations in the nucleon sea provide a consistent framework for understanding a number of empirical anomalies observed in the deep inelastic quark-parton structure of nucleons: the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon sea implied by the violation of Gottfried sum rule, the proton spin problem implied ...
متن کاملThe Γ * P Total Cross Section and Elastic Diffraction
The empirical scaling law, wherein the total photoabsorption cross section depends on the single variable η = (Q 2 + m 2 0)/Λ 2 (W 2), provides empirical evidence for saturation in the sense of σγ * p(W 2 , Q 2)/σγp(W 2) → 1 for W 2 → ∞ at fixed Q 2. The total photoabsorption cross section is related to elastic diffraction in terms of a sum rule. The excess of diffractive production over the el...
